Air Handlers - Filter Replacement
The Air Handlers in units require that their filters be replaced every 3 months.
- 1 bedroom units have 18x18x1 Inch Filters
- 2 bedroom units have 18x20x1 Inch Filters
These are non-standard size filters, and cannot be found in local stores, but must be purchased from somewhere such as HomeDepot.com (18x18) (18x20).
You'll also want to be conscious of the MERV rating of the filters. This determines how small of a particle the filter captures on first pass-through.
HomeDepot does not offer a 18x20 filter with high Merv Rating, but one can be found elsewhere.
The procedure is rather simple:
- Turn off your heating system (also consider turning off the circuit for the air handler)
- Unscrew the two screws on the large white Air Handler Unit
- Remove the door by lifting it up out of the notches
- Withdrawl the old filter vertically and dispose of.
- Slide the new filter into the same spot
- Place todays date on the top of the old filter for reference.
- Replace the air handler door, screw it in, and turn the system back on!
